French development studio Cyanide intends to make the first video games based on one of the most beloved and bloody series of fantasy novels in recent memory.

George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel are full of swords, sex, cracked family trees and dragons.

Like many a video game, they're also full of death. Enjoying the adventures of a character them? Assume he or she dies at some point.

Cyanide, makers of Blood Bowl, apparently believe that such material will make for a great game. They've announced today that they've obtained the rights to make games out of these books for "next-generation consoles and PC" in collaboration with Marin.

"The twists and turns of the plot will allow us to deliver an experience which can be enjoyed by both long-time fans as well as gamers new to the series," Cyanide's managing director, Patrick Pilgersdoffer said in a press release.

The first book in the series, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996. Three more have been published in the as-of-yet unfinished series.
