By any measure, Dark Souls is a difficult game, but for whatever reason, hardcore fan bearzly always wants to make it harder. He’s beaten the game with Rock Band’s drums and guitar, as well as Donkey Konga’s bongo set. His latest feat involves putting down controllers entirely.
I’m still flabbergasted by the whole thing, honestly, and can’t quite believe my eyes (or ears).
“After finishing Dark Souls with a bunch of Rock Band controllers,” he wrote on reddit, “it was about time to drop the physical controllers and play the game with 0 hands and a microphone. This run was suggested to me many times and I never knew if it would be possible, but after someone showed me a program that did the hard work of voice recognition for me I had to give it a shot.”
There’s a tool called VoiceAttack that can translate voice commands into keyboard presses, which allowed bearzly to control certain aspects of his character. In order to perform his heavy attack, he says “heavy attack.” To use an estus flask, he says “item.” You get the idea.
It’s not instantaneous, either. There was roughly a 1.5 second lag in-between speaking the command and having something happen on the screen, forcing him to plan well in advance.
But 30 hours and 485 deaths later, he’d defeated Gwyn and saw the credits roll yet again.
“By far the hardest run I have completed,” he said about his latest challenge.
No shit, buddy!
It’s hard to imagine how bearzly would be able to top this one, but I’d love to see him try.
“I doubt I will try anything more insane than this,” he said, “but I’m open to suggestions.”
