Bath Scenes, Of All Things, Are Adding Depth To Our Game Heroes

Bathing is a well-used trope in film and TV. The “shower of angst,” for example, is usually a stand-in for an emotional moment happening to our hero. It might make us empathize more with the person lowering their head under a flow of water. A few video game bathing scenes over the years have let…

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

The weekend is for usually writing some funny thing here about your weekend and then also mentioning video games, but you’re playing Prey for review so that’s all you’ve got. I’m playing Prey. I streamed some of it earlier today and it was a lot of fun, though I wish the mimics would jump like…

The Long Dark Pisses Off Players With Unsatisfying Teaser

This week, The Long Dark developer Hinterland learned a tough lesson: If you’re going to put a weeks-long countdown clock on your game’s homepage, it should be counting down to something amazing—not another countdown. A little over 20 days ago, wilderness survival sim The Long Dark started a mysterious countdown on its home page. For…

The first two episodes of The Long Dark’s story mode, Season One: Wintermute, will launch August 1st. The game will also come out of Early Access that day for Steam, Xbox One, and—surprise!—PS4.

Sailaway Lets You Explore The World’s Oceans In Real Time, Which Is More Fun Than It Sounds

As I’ve said on this site before, I used to live on a boat, but it wasn’t a sailboat. Playing Sailaway, a sailing simulator that came out on Steam early access last week, I’m learning what it could have been like if we’d had sails: bigger waves, the same absurd amount of ropes, and a…

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Weekends are for going to sing karaoke for your friend’s birthday but never knowing the available songs because all you know is 90s punk rock, musical theater, and obscure hymns from the 1800s. Also, video games. I’ve been playing Sailaway, a sailing simulator that just came into early access. It uses real-time weather data, so…

Flinthook Is A Tough But Fair Game About A Space Pirate

There are several bosses in Flinthook, a 2D platforming roguelike (roguelike-like? A game with roguelike elements? ANYWAY) by Tribute Games that is out today for computers and consoles. Seven hours in I haven’t beaten the first boss, but I’m having a great time anyway. You play as the eponymous tiny masked pirate, boarding a series…

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

The weekend is for having a friend stay with you and debating between actually cleaning the house/buying food or just kicking your dirty laundry under the bed/ordering pizza. Also, video games. I have an upcoming game to play, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for more Witcher 3. I’ve definitely been taking my time…

Cities: Skylines’ Mass Transit DLC releases May 18th. So much fun stuff! Here’s a trailer.

Elite: Dangerous’ latest update brings multi-crew, commander creation, and a whole lot more. Also, “new mysterious things added.” The best type of things are the mysterious type.

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Weekends are for agreeing to go see A Doll’s House with your friend so spending tomorrow morning brushing up on your Ibsen because you don’t remember that play at all. Also, video games. I enjoyed my time with Gwent on PS4 last weekend, and today I got an email saying I’m in the PC beta.…

Rain World got a patch that provides some gameplay improvements, including keeping map progress upon death, no longer getting stuck in those fake exits, and some tweaks to karma loss. Will it make the game less maddening? I hope so!

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Weekends are for reminding yourself that even though the workout routine you just started isn’t super impressive, you gotta start somewhere, and getting some exercise will make you happier than lounging around. Also, video games. I am so excited for the PS4 Gwent beta this weekend I can’t even tell you. Playing Gwent against real people…

Gwent gets a PS4 beta this weekend, from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. Your progress will be deleted once the beta’s over, but that’s still a whole weekend for me to lose at Gwent to actual people. Oh boy!
