The Google TV Streamer 4K is Google’s dedicated streaming box, released in September 2024 to replace the Chromecast with Google TV. Video output tops out at 4K HDR with Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos handles the audio. A processor 22% faster than the previous Chromecast pairs with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage inside the box. Google TV is the operating system, with Gemini AI built in for content search and voice control. An Ethernet port on the back also supports a wired network connection.
A streaming device that’s perfect for simplicity and ease of use
The TV Streamer 4K is the top of Google’s current streaming lineup, replacing the Chromecast line that Google discontinued in 2024. The upgraded processor and RAM keep the interface responsive when switching between apps, downloading updates, or streaming 4K video. Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV+ are preloaded, with hundreds of other streaming apps available in the Google Play Store.
The Streamer outputs up to 4K HDR through the HDMI 2.1 port on the back. Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG are all decoded natively, so HDR content plays back in whatever format your streaming service delivers. Dolby Atmos audio also passes through to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver for spatial sound in movies and shows. An HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately.
Google built the TV Streamer to double as a smart home hub. A dedicated Home panel on the interface lets you control lights, thermostats, cameras, and other Matter- or Thread-compatible devices from your couch. Built-in Thread radios also let the Streamer act as a hub for battery-powered smart home devices that would otherwise need a separate one. Gemini AI on the device provides show summaries, generative screensavers, and voice-based content search.
The included Voice Remote adds a customizable button that can launch any specific app, switch inputs, or jump straight to the smart home panel. Find My Remote also plays a loud beep from the remote when you press a button on the Streamer or ask Google Assistant for help. Ethernet on the back of the Streamer gives you a stable wired connection for 4K streams, though built-in Wi-Fi 6 also works for wireless setups.
At $75, down from $100, this discount on the Google TV Streamer 4K brings the price closer to that of a standard streaming stick. If your current setup is a Chromecast that has slowed down over the years, or you want a streamer and a smart home hub in one device, this fits both roles.
