Planescape Torment is widely lauded as one of the best-written (not to mention weirdest) games of all time. It's so revered that the Kickstarter for its spiritual successor, Torment: Tides of Numenera, raked in a whopping $4.1 million. How's it shaping up, though? Now, finally, you can see.
Giant brain scrambling squid monsters, quivering lumps of flesh, sinister sounds that worm their way through your ears—yep, this looks like a Torment game. Developer inXile (who did not create Planescape Torment but has brought on people who worked on it) definitely seems to be on the right track, and even if they're not they're doing a damn good impression of it. I'm not sold on the writing yet, but they've nailed the look and feel.
Now that inXile's more or less wrapped up full-time work on Wasteland 2, they can begin full production on Torment. If all goes according to plan, it'll be out late next year. The wait just got painful—much like the sensation of a brain scrambling squid monster tentacle stirring your brain meats into a hearty stew—but at least we've got the fantastic Divinity: Original Sin and, soon, Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity to tide us over. It's a good time to be someone who loves dialogue trees and clicking on people to make numbers come out.
