We got a new look at Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game, and it’s sparking discussions about the Ratchet and Clank developer’s continued foray into photorealism and how something about its superhero designs seems a bit…off.
This isn’t a new conversation for the studio, which has also released three Spider-Man games and, after the release of the first, changed Peter Parker’s face for no discernable reason beyond making the character look a whole lot more like MCU actor Tom Holland. There’s an uncanniness to the character now, with him looking like a legally distinct version of the British actor, and in the years since the change, Holland has gotten old enough that it no longer really looks like him, either. In Wolverine, meanwhile, the title character is both voiced by actor Liam McIntyre and bears his likeness, but not everyone is thrilled with the final look.
Entertainment Weekly spoke with McIntyre about the role, and it sounds like the Spartacus actor got really into it while shooting, saying he tried to find videos of rabid dogs to get the “feral” version of Logan down, the final results of which his team said were “terrifying.”
“I guess that’s good, right? Being terrifying,” he tells EW. “But, suddenly, I was like, ‘I’m really scared to go all out with this,’ but they’re such a good team that you feel safe. They will help me if it’s not gonna work. They will tell me. They won’t just let it happen. So I got to take some really huge swings with my character as a result of being able to trust them so much.”
You can check out more of EW’s interview in their story, but the part that has folks talking are the exclusive screenshots of Logan unmasked, which show a digital facsimile of McIntyre as the mutant. Reception has been decidedly mixed.
Theyve gotta stop setting up the actors like this man. The faces aren't the issue, its the fact Insomniac can't seem to style their characters to save their lives https://t.co/ta4pzUfbpB

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Logan without a mask in Wolverine, but these specific shots have given some fans pause. Part of the criticism is that Logan looks like a regular guy, and that Insomniac’s Marvel games lack the visual personality and style of the comic book source material. That’s not to say that these games have to take on a very animated look to match Wolverine’s comic origins, but in general, Insomniac’s superhero universe just looks kind of generic. Though Spidey and Wolverine look great in costume, when you take off the mask, characters are a bit indistinct, and it makes even Logan’s iconic sideburns and mutton chops look a bit silly.
There’s a strong chance Logan’s face will look better in motion, and maybe some of McIntyre’s performance and expression can bring out some of that personality. For now, fans are taking the liberty of making a few tweaks that they feel improve his look. This one I saw of Logan with thicker eyebrows actually did make me stop and go, “huh, that is an improvement.”
Wolverine is coming to PS5 on September 15.
