Grand Theft Auto 6 is the most anticipated gaming release ever and it won’t be on Switch 2, at least not at launch or possibly ever. Asked about the possibility of an eventual port, Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard suggested it wasn’t up to her.
“That’s going to be a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time,” Pritchard told Variety in a new interview. In addition to being the only modern gaming console not getting GTA 6 this fall, Switch 2 is also the only console getting a first-party exclusive that’s going head-to-head with Rockstar’s open world juggernaut. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will arrive just two weeks ahead of time on November 5.
But even if it remains a mystery whether the Switch 2 is even capable of satisfactorily running GTA 6, there are other games Rockstar could be porting to Nintendo’s newest device. Red Dead Redemption 2 still isn’t available on the handheld hybrid, despite coming to the last-gen PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S. GTA 5 hasn’t been ported either.
Virtuous, which ported Rockstar’s L.A. Noire to Switch, would love to take on the challenge. “[The] team is eager to adapt Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch,” technical director Fong told Pocket Tactics. “We’re personally big fans and believe these games can shine again on the Switch, delighting even more players.”
Those open-world games are two of only four top selling games of all time that aren’t available on Switch 2. The others are PUBG and Wii Sports. A successor to the later, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, arrives on October 22.
Bolstering the case for Rockstar getting GTA 5 on Switch 2, especially if GTA 6 is a no-go, is the fact that GTA Online remains massively popular and Rockstar has yet to reveal plans for sunsetting it anytime soon. For Switch 2 fans who are pining for some some Vice City madness this November, well, there’s always the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. That one is on Nintendo’s console.
