"Wii U will have in-game chat functionality for select games, including, but not limited to, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin’s Creed III and Mass Effect 3. This feature will be supported by licensed stereo headsets that plug directly into the headphone port of the Game Pad. Licensed headsets are available from Turtle Beach and TRITTON."
That's the official statement that a Nintendo rep made that started all this hullabaloo. Nowhere in there is there confirmation/denial of Gamepad mic usage, non-licensed headsets, party chat or any of the other things people have been screaming about since Kotaku and IGN broke this "story."
Maybe things will turn out exactly the way yesterday's Kotaku article outlined them, but we have absolutely no proof that is the case. So until we get actual, word-of-God confirmation from Nintendo, how about we all just take a deep breath, un-bunch our collective panties and avoid jumping to conclusions?
