Why Do People Press Buttons Twice And Thrice?

RE: If The Shoe Fits

I moved into my new place on Monday — and have been unpacking since. Don't think we'll be fully settled anytime some — mounds and mounds of stuff to unpack.

This is regarding a conversation I was having with someone over the weekend: Why do people press buttons on elevators twice? Sure, they're impatient. But don't buttons respond the first time? And wouldn't pressing the same button twice even possibly make the elevator move slower?

Then again, maybe the people who design elevators know people press the buttons twice and design the elevators so that the second press actually makes the elevator move faster.

Man, I'm sleepy.
