So far I haven't heard about a single new mechanic in the new SSB game and that has me sort of disappointed. I don't think I've ever even heard of a fighting game that doesn't introduce any new concepts from its successors. SSBM added air dodging, sidestepping, item catching, power shielding, grappling, wall jumping, a fourth special move per character, etc. SSBB changed air dodging to more like an aerial sidestep, added footstools, plus final smashes, and tripping (which when done randomly sucks, but as a mechanic for things like Diddy's banana peel feels like it has purpose). It looks like SSB4's engine changes are just all about tuning and little else.

I guess character customization is at least something cool in a similar vein to that.
