Not to be outdone by Target's recent in-store game department remodeling, Walmart launches its online Gamecenter, a one-stop shop for video game previews, first-look exclusives, and special offers on the latest games, including a $50 eGift card preordering three games.

The Walmart Gamecenter, presented by Axe Twist, is now live, with a snazzy new dynamic interface that just screams "I've been made for edgy and hip gamers!" More than just a shopping portal, the Gamecenter features all sorts of trailers, screenshots, and exclusive web content for upcoming games. Actually clicking a link to purchase a game takes you out of this hip new experience to the boring old Walmart order page, but it's a start.

Celebrating the opening of Gamecenter, Walmart is giving customers who preorder three upcoming titles a $50 eGift card. The company is also offering $.97 shipping on all video game titles.

"Walmart Gamecenter combines incredible savings with exclusive gaming content all in a compelling and interactive experience online," says Kelly Thompson, vice president of merchandising for Walmart.com. "Gaming enthusiasts will be drawn in by the exclusive content and developer interviews, while moms will appreciate the special savings only Walmart can offer on the hottest video game titles."

Yesterday we reported on the massive overhaul Target is giving to the video game departments at its retail stores, complete with games sorted by genre. I suppose Walmart realized that their average employee would never be able to handle that task, and opted for an online solution instead.

Hey, I said average! I know there are some exceptional Walmart employees out there...somewhere.
