Late last week, captain_slow48 posted an Unreal Engine 4 recreation of Doom’s first level online. “I built this to familiarize myself with the engine,” he said, adding that he tried to be “as faithful to the original aesthetic as possible.” Which is exactly what happened.
In the relevant thread on the Unreal Engine forums, another user commented that some elements of the map, like the room with the acid pool, were fine in the original Doom engine but look out-of-place in UE4:
Which is a fair point. Still, the recreation is very faithful and I’d say it looks pretty good for a learning project. Besides, it’s not like we’re overflowing with 3D Doom fanart.
