Creative Assembly's Total War series is one of the few remaining blockbuster franchises on the PC that is, at heart, a truly PC game. That hasn't stopped the developers from exploring how the game would work on a console.

"We have actually solved the problem with controlling Total War games using a control pad anyway", CA's lead artist Kevin McDowell tells CVG.

"In the past one of the artists actually coded up some experimental stuff just on his own time and was like, 'Oh that actually works really well.'"

"But I think the biggest issue really is, would Total War sell on console? It's kind of difficult to answer that question without spending all that money."

Before you panic, remember, Creative Assembly said this sort of thing before. And before you panic, remember, there's already been a Total War game on consoles! Spartan: Total Warrior was a solid action game spin-off for the series, released in 2005 on the Xbox, PS2 and even GameCube.

This time, though, it sounds like a lot more serious thought has been given to the subject.

"There's also, which is the better platform to push for, which is the best method?" adds lead designer Jamie Fergusson.

"I mean you've talked about using joypads, we've also looked elsewhere, we're looking at everything including iPhones, online gaming as well. Just different ways of playing."
