The Weekend In Esports: Smash Bros. Lights Up The Utah Jazz's Arena

Pro Smash Bros. gets some big prize pools and an even bigger venue with the GameTyrant Expo 2017.

This weekend League takes a break ahead of the Worlds 2017 group stage. While things are mostly quiet across Dota, Overwatch, and Counter-Strike as well, big tournaments in Smash Bros. and Street Fighter are here to fill the void.

Below you’ll find where and when you can catch all the weekend’s biggest events in competitive gaming. Let us know what you’ll be watching in the comments or if you think there’s something we might have missed.

Smash Bros.

In Smash this weekend all eyes are on the GameTyrant Expo 2017 in Salt Lake City. With a $30,000 prize pool for both Melee and Smash Wii U, pros could finally win some cash worth writing home about. It’s also being held in the Vivint Smart Home Arena, home to the Utah Jazz. Play kicked off on Friday with matches resuming today at 2:00PM EDT today with Wii U and Melee singles pools. Top 8 will start on Sunday at 2:00PM in Wii U, with the event wrapping up later that afternoon with Melee top 8 starting at 4:00PM.

Dota 2

You can catch qualifiers for the Perfect World Masters this weekend with Na’Vi facing Vega Squadron earlier today followed by the winner going on to challenge Team Empire in the finals at 2:00PM EDT. You can stream those matches here.

There are also matches for the AMD SAPPHIRE Dota PIT League qualifiers going on with the European grand finals at 2:00PM EDT today followed by Vici Gaming vs. LGD in China at 1:00AM on Sunday. You can find those matches streaming live here.

Overwatch

The Contenders League takes a break this weekend but there’s still some pro Overwatch to be seen happening on the other side of the globe with the conclusion of the Premier Series 2017. Miracle Team One will take on Vici Gaming for the third place match while Miraculous Youngster face 1246 in the $100,000 prize pool event’s grand finals.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Group D of the ELEAGUE Premier 2017 event gets the spotlight this weekend in Atlanta with teams Heroic, Liquid, and SK looking to join Astralis at the top of the table. Following the European team’s dominant performance on Friday, Liquid faces SK and Heroic gets the winner of that series as all three search for the second playoff spot.

Street Fighter V

The Capcom Pro Tour visits Italy this weekend for Milan Games Week. Featuring Problem X, Phenom, and others, the tournament will have pool play throughout today followed by top 8 beginning at 6:00AM EDT on Sunday. You can stream that tournament here.

Meanwhile in the states, Punk, NuckleDu and the rest will be playing in the Northwest Majors starting at 3:00PM EDT today. Top 24 gets going at 7:00PM with top 8 slated for 9:30PM on Sunday. You can stream that event here.

StarCraft II

The 2017 AfreecaTV GSL Super Tournament 2 wraps up this weekend with three big series. First, INnoVation takes on Rogue at 4:00AM EDT on Sunday. Thne at 5:00AM EDT it’s Dark vs. herO. Finally, at 6:00AM the winners from both of those semifinals will face off in the grand finals.

Heroes of the Storm

HGC Playoffs got underway yesterday with matches resuming today at 5:00PM EDT, followed by round three at the same time on Sunday. In Europe matches start on both days at 2:00PM. The winner of the three rounds will join the first and second place finishers from the regular season in the HGC championship later this fall.

Rocket League

The matches kick-off in North America at 3:00PM today with FlyQuest vs. Ghost. Then in Europe the week’s action begins on Sunday at 12:00PM EDT with excel vs. FlipSid3 Tactics.

In week four of Smite’s fourth season, the action starts with PAP1S vs. DIG at 1:00PM EDT today, while on Sunday it’s vs. SSG at the same time.
