Say what you will about Halo 5 overall, but if there’s one thing Microsoft and 343 did not screw around on, it was putting together a roster of very talented concept artists to work on the game.

The end result is mixed—I think the last two Halos have suffered visually from a confused identity, torn between Bungie’s legacy and newer designs—but individually, these are some impressive pieces of work.

Below you’ll find a collection of images showcasing some of the concept art behind Halo 5. It doesn’t cover every artist, but it’ll give you a general idea of the themes and work behind one of the biggest games of the year.

I’ve posted many times before about how I prefer Bungie’s visual interpretation of the Halo universe over 343’s.

Everything in 343’s games just seem so over designed, everything has to have extraneous glowing bits and swooping curves for no clear reason. Contrast that to Bungie’s games where each race has it’s own unique look. Humans have a very utilitarian/industrial looks, Covenant have their signature purple hues and curves surfaces, and the Forerunner have geometric designs with minimal detailing.
