The rumored, leaked and teased nightclub management expansion to Grand Theft Auto Online is coming out some time in July. In a post today, development studio Rockstar noted players can “[r]un your nightclub business from setup, design, staffing and promotion.” More details to come.

Interesting. Club management was a fun minigame in The Ballad of Gay Tony.

From the Newswire post:

Nightclubs are the perfect cover for any other operation you might have going, so get in on the ground level as a business partner to open up a brand new establishment, and help the DJ’s make their shows the best ever. Run your nightclub business from setup, design, staffing and promotion; the more popular the club, the faster your secure wall safe will fill up. Management is honest work, a tidy way to keep income from your more seedy ventures with Disruption Logistics, The Open Road, SecuroServ and Free Trade Shipping Co. looking clean as fresh laundry.

That’s mostly flavor text, but it makes me wonder if the gameplay mechanics of making money with nightclubs will vary much from existing businesses. There are basically two types of businesses in the game right now:

  1. Active income, where you steal product from NPCs, stockpile it in a warehouse, and then eventually deliver the product to NPC buyers
  2. Passive income, where you steal supplies from NPCs or buy them, and then a factory makes product while you’re doing other things in the game, and eventually you deliver the product to NPC buyers

#1 has a better money/time ratio, but requires more involved work than #2.

There are five different businesses now (cargo, drugs, vehicle cargo, gunrunning, and smuggling) and all of them fall into one of those categories. It’d be cool to see something different.
