The developers behind the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG, its online companion D&D Beyond, Magic: The Gathering, and Duel Masters are unionizing. The new group of workers would join United Wizards of the Coast, a union established earlier this year by Magic: The Gathering Arena developers in partnership with the Communication Workers of America.
“We are stewards of our games who deserve to be treated with all the respect and dignity that entails,” read a statement on the United Wizards of the Coast website. They are seeking layoff protections, better wages, protections against AI, remote work protections, and full ownership of work created outside WotC offices.
Earlier this year Magic: The Gathering Arena workers won their own union election, and this new unionization effort would bring every WotC IP (outside of Magic: The Gathering Online) under union representation. United Wizards of the Coast is asking for supporters to sign a petition to encourage parent company Hasbro to voluntarily recognize their union efforts. However, such recognition seems unlikely after WotC leadership sent letters to MTG Arena devs before their election asking them to carefully consider if a union was something they truly wanted.
