The NPD Group has compiled fifteen years worth of video game sales in the United States, determining that Nintendo's 2006 release Wii Play is the industry's top seller, beating out Grand Theft Autos and Call of Dutys easily.

And it did it on one platform, with its nearest competitor, Guitar Hero III relying on four platforms to threaten Wii Play for sales dominance. Wii Play is one of three first party Nintendo games for the Wii that made the NPD Group's list, according to a report from GameSpot, joined by Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii.

Three Call of Duty games made the list, with Modern Warfare 2 dominating its siblings.

The oldest title to make the list was Namco Museum, first released in 1995, the start of NPD's reporting. It did so by brute force, with releases on Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, PSP, Nintendo 64, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation, and Xbox 360 helping the compilation secure a top ten spot.

Sweet, sweet coretard tears. I'm just loving it. Shall we now have NPR's Planet Money do a week long, 25 hour special to hammer it home to folks.. that from the time Pong was raking in the money in dirty bars in Southern Cal, to the crash, to the explosive return in the mid 80's, to the PSOne and PS2 getting the marketshare they did, to the GameBoy being born at the #1 spot and only leaving when it was time for the DS to step in, to the Wii and who knows what in the future..

This market has always been and will always be about causal gamers. Not you. The money for the development of the systems, the ads, the game budgets, all paid for by causals. So keep crying hot, sweat tears of rage across the internets, in your comic and anime con game rooms and within your game stores. Meanwhile, I'm off to talk the joy of video games with the people who are the real power behind the market and remind them that no matter how many sneers that pasty-face punks and neckbeards give them, they are quite welcome and I'll gladly discuss the finer points of riding cows and Tanks with them because unlike so many here who's e-cred seems threatened, I have just as much fun doing that as I do sitting in Sea and watching AV murder yet one more group of people.

Nintendo has taught developers the final lesson they will need to avoid ruining themselves, you don't need games that run 30+ million and 5+ years in development to bring in new blood, keep older games happy and make sure everyone gets a paycheck.
