The Art Of Mortal Kombat

For a game that's always been darker and grittier than its rival Street Fighter, the new Mortal Kombat has a surprising amount of...beauty to it.

The game's art style sets the same tone the rest of it does: a return to not just the roots of the series but the business of fighting, and nothing says Mortal Kombat like moody, moonlit nights and people dressed like they're in a comic book from the 1990s.

Working with Mortal Kombat developers and artists at NetherRealm, British concept art house Atomhawk helped contribute some of the character and environment design for the game. In this gallery you can see some examples of the work they did, including stage art and classic takes on several of Mortal Kombat's most iconic characters.

Ari Schwartz: Dark Lord of the Snark

The drawings of the women make me think a few things:

1. The artists have never actually seen a real woman, and have no idea what a real woman's body looks like.

2. They all went to the Rob Liefeld School of Art.

3. They have no concept whatsoever of physics.

It's still absolutely amazing to me (and this is here and in Japan, mind you) that they draw women who are supposed to be martial artists as having two giant water balloons strapped to their chests. Also, no kidneys, apparently.

Look at picture 8. Hint: women's breasts don't do that.

I'm not saying, "OMG SEXISM." I'm saying, "This is not attractive. This is 13-year-old boy wet dream crap."
