While there are two official games coming based on the classic XCOM (or, really, X-Com) universe, there's another, less official one in the pipeline as well: PC indie strategy title Xenonauts.

Originally unveiled in 2010, and billed as a spiritual successor to the original X-Com game, it's just received a fairly substantial visual overhaul, which you can see in the shots in the gallery above. You'll also find some work-in-progress images of the game's user interface, a fetish I know many of you, like me, can't get enough of.

Xenonauts is currently in alpha. You can actually play it now, though, if you preorder, with more information at the game's official site.

This game was cancelled I believe due to lack of funds. However, if it is still going, it'll just be XCOM but without annoying bits.

For example, in the original, you started with "Elite" soldiers that couldn't hit a barn door, had crap gear and no body armour. In Xenonauts you get body armour and better stats. Stuff like that.

However, since X-COM: Enemy Unknown is being done by Fraxis, the kings of turn based strategies..... I suspect it shall be better.

I'm still looking forward to the XCOM re-imagined... God the hate thrown at that game and all the while the company was working on a turn based one as well.....
