It’s Summer Game Fest week, and that means we get a bunch of showcases as the industry fills the E3-sized void in its June. Sony kicked things off with a State of Play stream showing upcoming PS5 games from both its first-party studios and other teams. If you didn’t get a chance to watch the show live, you can do so below, or if you just want the highlights, read on.
Wolverine
Kicking things off is Wolverine, the next Marvel game from Insomniac. In the new demo, Logan sneaks around a facility housing some mutants who are being held hostage and then absolutely tears through the guards. This shit’s kinda gnarly. Good on Insomniac for not sanitizing the violence in this game. However, he’s not alone. Jean Grey shows up and lends her psychic powers to the cause, helping Logan save the mutants before they’re taken away by Trask Industries.
There’s some pretty sick team-up moves here that have Jean holding an enemy with her telekinetic powers as Logan slices and dices them. That fight is followed by a chase scene in which Logan rides a motorcycle after the trucks holding the mutants captive. The footage also suggests that Wolverine will be able to use his healing factor to get back on his feet if his health reaches zero. I wonder how many times players will be able to use that trick before they get a game over. Game looks sick. It’s coming to PS5 on September 15. Gimme.
Marvel TĹŤkon: Fighting Souls
The Marvel moment is not over, as we also get a new trailer for Arc System Works’ Marvel TĹŤkon: Fighting Souls. The trailer reveals a new team, the Knights of Doom, which is basically a hodgepodge of Marvel villains all teaming up together. This group includes Doctor Doom, Magneto, the Green Goblin, and Carnage. The roster is really filling out ahead of TĹŤkon‘s launch on PS5 and PC on August 6.
Rayman Legends Retold
One of the best Rayman games is getting remade, with Rayman Legends Retold, a from-the-ground-up remake of the modern sidescrolling classic. It’s coming out on October 1. You can read our hands-on impressions here.
Bancho the Chef
Mintrocket, the team behind Dave the Diver, showed off prequel Bancho the Chef which, as the name implies, is made up of a lot of cooking mini-games. The game is now in development, but we didn’t get any release date info.
Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen
Next up is Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen, a fast-paced, anime-inspired co-op open-world action game. Up to three players can fight its various demonic foes when it comes out in 2027. It’s coming from Unseen, the team led by Ikumi Nakamura, known for her work at Tango Gameworks and Capcom on games like The Evil Within and Okami.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis
After a release date leak just a few hours before the show, we got a new look at Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the new remake of the original Tomb Raider game. It will launch on February 12 of next year.
The Lost Wild
Annapurna Interactive showed up with a look at The Lost Wild, an upcoming narrative adventure with what looks like some survival elements as you fight and run away from dinosaurs.
Phantom Blade Zero
Phantom Blade Zero got a brief tease ahead of a bigger reveal coming later this summer.
Dune: Awakening
Dune: Awakening is finally coming to PS5 after launching on PC last year. It will include a new single-player mode when it launches on September 22.
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered
Dynasty Warriors 3 is getting a PS5 remaster, and it will include Ziluan, the protagonist of Dynasty Warriors Origins. It’s coming to PS5 on October 1.
No Rest for the Wicked
The souls-like action RPG from Oni developer Moon Studio is getting its 1.0 update after two years in Early Access. It’s coming to PS5 in October.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Capcom showed up next with a new look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the long-awaited follow-up to its classic samurai action games. The game will launch on September 25, and a demo is available to download now.
Silent Hill: Townfall
Silent Hill: Townfall is up next. It’s very spooky, eerie, and full of gross-out monsters to stealth around. The game will launch on September 24.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve
Bandai Namco showed off an action-packed new story trailer for Ace Combat: Wings of Theve. The game will launch on October 2, and will include a port of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War if you pre-order the game or get an early physical copy.
Stuntman: Hollywood
Saber Interactive was up next with a new Stuntman game called Stuntman: Hollywood. These games have you perform sick stunts for movies, and it’s been a hot minute since there was a new one. The eye-catching feature of this entry is that, unlike previous Stuntmans, the stunts here are licensed, with you officially doing stunts for Knight Rider, Miami Vice, Back to the Future and other popular films and TV shows.
Ill
Now we head back into the horror hole with Ill, a first-person zombie game that’s got some pretty gross creepy crawlies right up in your face. It’s coming out next year from Team Clout.
Control Resonant
Remedy showed off another look at Control Resonant, the new hack-and-slash sequel to the acclaimed 2019Â Control. It stars Dylan Faden, the brother of previous protagonist Jesse, and he’s been through some dark shit as you’ll know if you played the original Control. The game launches on September 24.
Marathon
Bungie showed off some new content for the just-launched second season of Marathon, including a new zone, shell, modes and much more.
PlayStation Plus
Sony highlighted a few games coming to PlayStation Plus, including Runescape: Dragonwilds, which will come to PS5 when it launches in the fall. New Classics catalog games include Gitaroo Man in June, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy in July, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in August.
Until Dawn 2
Well, this was a surprise. Firesprite is making Until Dawn 2, starring a new cast of ghost hunters who typically fake their content, only to find a real horror show. It’s coming to PS5 in 2027.
God of War Laufey
Wrapping up the show is the long-rumored God of War spin-off Laufey. The game will star Faye, Kratos’ wife who had passed by the time the 2018 reboot began. We pick up shortly after her passing, as she awakens in an unknown part of the Nine Realms. Though she doesn’t have her trusty Leviathan Axe, she makes do with a sword and some magical powers of her own, but notes that these fights shouldn’t have been as “difficult” as they feel, implying she’s lost some of her power, wherever she is. While in this afterlife realm, she comes across what appear to be Egyptian gods, which God of War has previously teased could show up in a future installment. There’s also a weird gelatinous cube and talking ribbons attached to her new sword. It seems like she’s in some kind of afterlife for gods, so who knows, we might see some returning characters from previous God of War games that Kratos killed in Greece. Laufey doesn’t have a release date, unfortunately, so who knows if we’ll see it before or after the planned God of War trilogy remake.
