Years in development, and here it finally is, Dragon Quest X. It's an online game. It's for the Wii and Wii U. This is what it looks like.

Dragon Quest VIII was dazzling. For 2004 and 2005, it was truly a beautiful game. DQVIII was a leap forward, it was a fresh take on an old friend.

Two games and years later, Dragon Quest X looks caught in DQVIII land, which wouldn't be so bad if this was 2005. But it's not. It's 2011.

Dragon Quest fans will be happy, but I can't help but feel that from what Square Enix has shown graphically and gameplay wise, this is a lost opportunity. It's a safe bet in a world where "safe" is code for "easy".

With the Wii U, Nintendo is rolling out new hardware, and one of the first huge Japanese titles we see for it looks to be a polished Wii port.
