The Total War series returns later this year with Shogun 2: Total War, the sequel to the game that gave the venerable franchise its start.

While the terrain may be familiar to fans of the original, the visuals certainly won't be, the game's engine clearly having been given a tweak or three since Napoleon: Total War.

It's lovely to see the return of the coastal missions, too. It always felt a bit funny fighting someone on the beach in Empire/Napoleon only to enter a battle and see nothing but...hills.

The last Total War game I played was Medieval II. I've been thinking of picking up either Napoleon or Empire but I can't decide between them.

Which is meant to be the better game? The setting for them doesn't sway me one way or the other.

I've heard Empire is pretty stable and the community got behind it with mods etcs. Has that happened with Napoleon yet or will it never happen?

As for Shogun 2 those screens look fantastic. The lighting looks superb.
