Virtual world creator Linden Labs is restructuring in an effort to "generate efficiencies and support investment in new platforms." The quick translation on that into English is that the Second Life maker is canning 30% of its workers.
According to the company, that restructuring will mean a consolidation of some internal divisions and a Second Life that's "simpler, more enjoyable, relevant and engaging for consumers starting with their first experience."
Linden CEO Mark Kingdon says the company is also working toward a "browser-based virtual world experience, eliminating the need to download software" and bring the Second Life experience to "popular social networks."
"Ultimately, we want to make Second Life more accessible and relevant to a wider population," he said.
