Screenshots That Look Like Photos

Rense de Boer is a former DICE artist who is now doing his own thing in the name of “video game graphics that you’d think were photos if we hadn’t told you they were video game graphics”.

We’ve featured some of his stuff previously on Kotaku, but he’s recently shared a collection of his 2016 art—based on personal work developing “high end, real-time graphics”—that’s so good we’re going to feature more of it today.

de Boer is working with in Unreal Engine 4 photogrammetry, which is the same process that gets the landscape in games like Battlefront and Battlefield 1 looking so damn pretty. So while in isolation these screenshots look incredible, it’s worth remembering that they’re not hinting at some far-off future that may be possible. This is all designed to run in real-time, now (or at least very very soon, if you don’t have a high-end PC).
