With apologies to Hobbes, life in the American West also was nasty, brutish and short. And also hellaciously violent, as Rockstar's second trailer shows in the variety of encounters you'll have - and survive - in Red Dead Redemption.

I just realized I'm going to be nowhere near a console when this sucker drops May 18. But once it does, I doubt I'm going to be playing anything else for a solid month. Red Dead Revolver wasn't perfect but it showed up at a good time in my life, and I've missed being able to revisit that lawless land. (There's a fatal incompatibility with the Xbox 360 that stops the game cold at the canyon level.) It looks like what's coming will be 10 times deeper than the original project, which Rockstar bought from Capcom.
