The PSP has crossed an important sales milestone. The Sony handheld gaming console has sold over 50 million units worldwide.

The PlayStation Portable went on sale December 12, 2004 in Japan, March 24 the following year in North America and September 1 of that same year in PAL regions. Slimmer models have been introduced since the PSP first launched.

While the portable has been criticized for "lacking games" in the West and viewed in the DS's shadow, Japan specific titles and features have powered hardware sales in The Land of the Rising Sun.
