Pokemon Is Super Effective At Blowing Up Nintendo DS Sales In Japan

Turns out selling more than 2.5 million copies of the latest Pokemon game(s) translates into a big boost for the Nintendo DS. Crazy! But just how many new Nintendo DSs did Japanese Pokemon fans snap up with the game?

More than 85,000, according to sales tracker Media Create, across the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL. Not too shabby for a week’s work, considering Nintendo has already sold more than 30 million of the things in Japan. That’s enough to clearly outsell the PlayStation competition this week.

The PSP and PlayStation 3 are still selling well amidst serious Pokemon competition. The PSP was slightly down, while the PS3 was slightly up from the week prior. Both outsold the Wii this week, which could use some new software to reinvigorate sales overseas.

The numbers after this.

Nintendo DSi – 47,379

Nintendo DSi LL – 31,254

PSP – 29,866

PlayStation 3 – 21,096

Wii – 14,833
