PC Sales Charts: All Over The Place

Illustration for article titled PC Sales Charts: All Over The Place

The beauty of PC sales charts is that, as often as they're depressingly repetitive, other times they're an explosion of strangeness and absurdity.

Like this latest batch, where we have three very different games atop the three major sales charts. Lich King at #1 on the retail charts, we'd expect that. Left 4 Dead, surging back to reclaim top spot on Steam, that's a little less expected. And as for Direct2Drive's charts, well. Those are just nutty.

DISCUSSION

As much as I click on these charts all the time to see them, they honestly just don't mean much to me without some actual sales numbers attached to them.

I mean, seriously. Lich King has been at or near the top of the retail list since release. The Sims games have been out for YEARS. How many more people can possibly be buying them? Same thing with the digital lists. Rome: Total War Gold #4?? And the other 3 in front of it? I mean seriously how many copies of those games can actually be selling in a week? The numbers have to be pretty damn depressing. I'm talking worse than 360-sales-in-Japan type depressing.

I love the PC, and I always will. But these sales charts, I just can't imagine the #'s are very pretty to look at. I think there's a reason why they're not released.
