When they cashed in on the video game crazy nearly 30 years ago, Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia didn't have to worry about licensing. Columbia/CBS records took care of that as Pac-Man Fever soared to No. 8 on the charts in 1982. Of course, the price they paid came later, in the form of CBS's insistence that they think up songs about Mousetrap, Frogger and Centipede, and the attendant decline in dignity.
Today, music publishing is a different landscape. Buckner & Garcia, video gaming's pre-eminent pop duo told Giant Bomb they had thoughts of working on an Angry Birds tribute (called, what, "Angry Birds Flu"?) but were unable to secure the necessary permission.
Thus, they've turned their attention to an unnamed, undescribed mobile app. My guess is its namesake will be derived from a video game and some sort of metaphorical affliction caused by it, characterized by the elevation of body temperature above the normal range of 98 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Although if they can't get Angry Birds for a song, I wouldn't bet on Pac-Man for a game.
If you've got Rock Band and you really want that song stuck in your head, Pac-Man Fever is available as a downloadable track. It'll drive you crazy. Going out of your mind.
