Overwatch’s new season kicked off this week with the addition of Shion, a new damage hero and an Omnic member of the Hashimoto clan. She is the most cyberpunk character in the shooter, and her playstyle is erratic and chaotic. This is usually juxtaposed by her calm, collected, but cruel demeanor. In most of her voice line interactions she is in control, taunting other characters and maintaining the upper hand. When does this woman let loose? When Ana Nano Boosts her.

Ana’s ultimate, Nano Boost, is a support ability that powers up the recipient’s damage output, reduces their damage taken, and gives them a strong dose of healing. The quick energy boost makes every hero who receives it shout something, whether it be warning their enemies of their newfound power or really playing up the character’s personality. Ranking these voice lines has become a popular trend for Overwatch fans, and now I imagine several creators will be updating their lists because Shion’s is one of the best.

My girl is shrieking. The wordless yell would no doubt instill fear in anyone on the wrong side of her pistols or the motorcycle she rides and then sends barreling down the choke point. Shion’s violent nature is always under the surface of even the most polite conversations she has with other heroes, but her human-like mask slips in battle, especially when she’s powered up.

I was not initially a fan of Shion’s design as I was disappointed that Overwatch was humanizing a synthetic Omnic character to give her the same “conventionally attractive” look the game has been criticized for falling back on over the years, but I am compelled by the bits of character exploration we’ve gotten illuminating how she intentionally made herself look human, much to the chagrin of Ramattra, who has been trying to lead Omnics to fight against human oppression.
