Our First Hands-on With Hyrule Warriors Legends on 3DS

Hyrule Warriors Legends, the upcoming enhanced 3DS port of Wii U title Hyrule Warriors was playable for the first time at the Tokyo Game Show this week.

The TGS demo shows off a lot of the new content not seen in the Wii U game. The level itself is an original and allows players to play as two of the characters new to Hyrule Warriors Legends: Tetra and Toon Link from Wind Waker—in addition to the normal Hyrule Warriors version of Link.

For my time with the demo, I chose to play as Tetra. Armed with her cutlass, water gun, and occasional triforce magic, I slaughtered hundreds of enemies in true Dynasty Warriors style.

Other than the new characters and level, the demo shows off two of the new tools in Hyrule Warriors Legends: the hammer and the ocarina. The hammer is able to activate switches—which in turn fire cannons to open up blocked paths. The ocarina, on the other hand, whisks you across the map to any of several owl statues scattered about—giving the game a much-appreciated fast-travel option.

Other than that, the game looks and plays like Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U (though with an obvious downgrade in resolution). So if having a portable version of the game with additional items, levels, and characters strikes your fancy, you won’t be disappointed.

Hyrule Warriors Legends will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on January 21, 2016. It is scheduled for a Western release sometime in 2016.

Is that enhanced... or dehanced? Considering it went from big console to small handheld.
