Oh, If Only Mega Man Still Looked This Good

Poor Mega Man. Forgotten by Capcom, even his spiritual successor is terrible. But people out there still love the little guy, and one of those people is artist Steven Zapata, who has worked for companies like DC, Universal and Google.

Attempting a bit of “self therapy after the lukewarm arrival of Mighty No.9", he decided to redesign Mega Man X and the Mavericks from Mega Man X1.

I like what he’s done here. Especially with Zero.

You can see more of Steven’s work at his personal site.

DISCUSSION

Pedantry:

Mega Man is not in this group, at all. That name, when used alone, is associated with Light’s robot, Rock. (i.e. Rock is Mega Man).

The Reploid that’s in the title image is named “X”. He’s never referred to as “Mega Man” in the games, not even in the context of “Mega Man X”.
As a supplement, his creator tell him that his name is “X” in a quote from the Day of Sigma OVA, here:

Dr. Light: My name is Dr. Thomas Light. I created you X.
X: X... you called me X... is that my name?
Dr. Light: That’s right. It’s a variable. It represents unlimited potential.

There are some schools of thought that say that “Mega Man” is a title (hence “Mega Man X”, and “Mega Man Zero”), but then the use of “Mega Man” as a singular title wouldn’t make sense in the headline.
In example, replacing it with another tile, “Oh, If Only President Still Looked This Good.”

Continuing, if we just took the headline to be discussing the game series (Oh, If Only [The Mega Man Series] Still Looked This Good.), the context fits, but it’s ambiguous, at best.
And, if that’s the case, do you honestly feel as though the Mega Man series doesn’t still have good artwork? Was that the intention of this piece? Because I think there are enough different sub-series, with enough different art styles to make that an oversimplification, at the very least.

My apologies if I’m the only one this is bugging. But I’m a huge Mega Man X fan, so I’m a stickler for the common misconceptions about the game. It’s like the old “What if Zelda were a girl?” meme.
Mega Man is not X.
