What first emerged as tabloid gossip seems to be escalating into a dangerous scandal for graphics card titans Nvidia. In recent weeks, stories emerged that CEO Jensen Huang fell victim to a honeypot operation. One that could have contributed to $2 million worth of contraband breaking sanctions on China. Now the company says they will be launching a formal investigation into Huang as they become the center point of artificial intelligence.

“The NVIDIA Board is initiating an independent investigation in light of recent reporting that founder and CEO Jensen Huang has been the target of a foreign intelligence effort,” reads the company statement. “A committee of independent directors, assisted by outside independent counsel, will oversee the investigation.”

In late October, stories began to emerge that Huang was the target of a spy plot, allegedly having an affair with Megaspeed executive Alice Huang. Megaspeed, another Singapore-based company, has been under investigation since 2024 over the smuggling of Nvidia hardware into China, an increasingly common practice but breach of American sanctions nonetheless. According to the Financial Times, US intelligence alleges that the Megaspeed executive was acting directly on behalf of the Chinese government as a spy, raising concerns that sensitive intel may have been supplied on top of parts. Now having confirmed to the company that the infidelity took place, Nvidia announced that they will launch a formal investigation into their acting CEO.

“I was unfaithful to my wife,” Huang wrote in a company memo. “My actions hurt her and our children. There is no excuse for what I did. I am deeply sorry.”

While PC gamers are long familiar with Nvidia, the GPU makers have grown into one of the most influential companies in the world, a prime driver behind the ever growing AI sector. While AI firms still struggle to deliver a profit for themselves, Nvidia is one of the biggest benefactors of the industry, manufacturing the parts that make it possible and watching the price tag on components surge. This scarcity and federal-level AI race has also launched efforts to limit China’s access to components, with Washington kicking off dramatic new policies to keep computer components and e-waste from leaving the country.

The news comes as the AI sector seemingly rankles from the results of the American midterm elections. Increased scrutiny and policy from incoming lawmakers seeming to spook the previously excitable investors. Despite the investigation, Nvidia says that Huang will remain as acting CEO. The company also maintains that despite the high scandal, they have “no reason to believe that either national security or NVIDIA secrets were compromised.”
