Civilization V: Gods & Kings will mark the return of religion and espionage, two Civilization IV features that were absent in the fifth installment of the popular turn-based strategy series.

It will also "reinvent the diplomatic system" and add a host of enhancements to the combat and city-state mechanics from Civilization V.

We'll have more details — including an interview with lead designer Ed Beach — about the upcoming expansion pack later today.

1) Remove fan favourite features

2)Charge them for it in expansion pack form

3)???

4)Profit!

I think I got that meme right...

Anyway, I'm sure it'll turn out fine with the other features they add in (even if they could be seen as just fixing a broken system by some people), but it just struck me as odd that features that were prominent in Civ IV (and beyond the sword) were removed for civ V, and the are being re-introduced at a price. It stinks of a moneygrabbing plot to me. But it's civilization, so what the heck.
