Does anybody know how he gets this effect?

The only way I could think to do it is by taking a B+W pattern in PS, embossing it, and using layer styles ontop of each graphic... of course also using lighting and putting a lot of thought into the perspective of some of the finer details...

Regardless, it's breathtakingly, beautiful work.
