Like Tecmo Bowl and RBI Baseball, NHL '94 is a sports video game that transcended its genre. Anyone who played a Genesis or Super Nintendo in the 1990s remembers its goal celebration - every player rushing the scorer, sticks raised.
Hardly unique to NHL '94 - many other games signified scores in similar ways - The Kamloops, B.C. Blazers re-enacted the game's celebration scene thanks to goalie Cam Lanigan, who still plays the game on his SNES. In November, the Blazers were waiting out a nervous instant replay review of a potential game-winner when the idea spread that, if the goal stood, they'd all celebrate like it was NHL '94. Sure enough, they did, and the tradition was born.
This video is from late December. Sports web site The Big Lead posted the vid today and ESPN radio's Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo gushed about it during their afternoon show, restarting the vid's viral effect for those who missed it before. For all we know, the Kamloops Blazers are still doing this video game celebration for every score.
