As Metal Gear Solid 4's release date draws near, more and more info about the game's expected to spill out. Some of it from people who have played through the thing already. People who sat through a lotta cutscenes. Some of them up to 90-minutes long. Nintety. Minutes. Sure, you can pause them, and skip them, but ninety minutes? Bring popcorn.

MGS4 has '90 minute' cut-scenes [CVG]

UPDATE - CVG say it has 90-minute cutscenes. GamePro beg to differ, saying that "sounds like an exaggeration", though in saying that they fail to provide a "corrected" figure.

Let me preface this by saying that I've never been a huge MGS cutscene fan for a couple of reasons. But saying that, we need to keep an open mind. 30+ hours of entertainment, whether it's cutscenes or gameplay, is a huge bargain. And while I'm usually a 360 fan, I can appreciate the PS3's appeal if it enables value like this. 30 or so hours? for $60? That's insanely huge! I love Halo, but that's bloody insane... I'll be really impressed with Sony and MGS4's creators if they manage to package up 30 or so hours of engaging entertainment for a $60 price tag.

However, having said that, I'm somewhat worried. In my opinion, MGS has tended cross the line from the "Dramatic", to "Melo-Dramatic". Don't understand the difference? It's the difference between MinMay from Robetech and Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry.

90 minutes could be either a "god-send" or a "bullet in the head", it really depends on the "minutes". If it's really 90 minutes of Godfather caliber drama, holy smokes, I'll go out and buy a PS3 that day just for that game. But if it's 90 minutes of posturing and repeated lengthy scenes of clinched fists, squinting eyes, and long shouts of "SNAAAKE!!!!!!"...

...well then, you'll find me cozying up to the Master Chief (it's simple, he keeps his "cool").
