20 Years Later, Few Nintendo Games Have Lived Up To Super Mario RPG
Squirreled away in a secret room within Monstro Town, a cliffside hamlet in Super Mario RPG, there’s a purple-skinned warrior named Culex. You can go the whole game without ever meeting this man; finding him requires you to backtrack to an earlier town, purchase a pricey set of fireworks, and trade it to an NPC…

CultureHow Game Of Thrones’ Battle Of The Bastards Was Made
Because giants aren’t real and hurting actual horses is bad, the production team behind Game of Thrones had some challenges to overcome when drawing up and filming the show’s epic Battle of the Bastards. SPOILERS AHEAD Their solution, as you’ll see in the video below, was to let Australian VFX studio Ilourafake it by blending…

Twitch’s Official Stance On Poop, Butt, and Orgasm Emotes Is Amazing
Last week, there was some commotion on Twitch over the removal of certain butt emotes. This week, Twitch clarified its new standards for emote approval, and man, some of these guidelines are golden. According to Twitch, all butts are not made equal: Butts and “booty” have taken on a silly but friendly cultural meaning outside of…

Stop It, Overwatch Cosplay
The more people get into Overwatch, the more Overwatch cosplay we see. The more we see, the better it gets. And few have been better than this Genji getup. It’s by Just Cosplay & Props, who says it’s his first cosplayer ever. Which…good God, man. The lights, the armour, the sword, it’s all perfect. Photos…

UncategorizedThe Things We Discovered While Playing Pokémon Go
Exploration has always been at the heart of the Pokémon series. A young person strikes out on a monster-collecting adventure, learning about the world around them along the way. My brief time with Pokémon Go felt like that, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. I may not be a young person anymore, but I still…

Kotaku EastThose Goofy Leaked Pokémon Are Real
Overnight, footage of some silly-looking characters from the upcoming Pokémon: Sun and Moon leaked online. No way they could be real. Turns out, they were. Clips of each new Pocket Monster appeared on YouTube sporting what looked like Russian game board ratings. Considering how there are always fakes and seeing how these designs looked questionable,…

Kotaku EastYou Gotta See China’s Super Smash Bros. Rip-Off
It’s really quite something else. Slated for mobile, Pocket All-Stars Smash Bros. might sound like Smash Bros. How it plays, though, is totally different. Forget the recent Splatoon clone, this one is even more brazen. Under the game’s Chinese title, it reads “Smash Bros.” (スマッシュブラザーズ) in Japanese. Smash Bros., it’s not. As pointed out by…

A Homeworld Buggy For The Home
Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak isn’t just a great game, it’s a gorgeous one to boot. Those carriers, those tanks…but the best unit of all is probably your Baserunner, which has been recreated here perfectly by a fan. gkermanused this 3D model by nli2work to print the toy, then painted and added effects by hand. Eight Years As A World Of Warcraft Guild Leader, Remembered

The Orion vs Activision Steam removal saga continues. Trek Industries’ David Prassel says that Activision contacted him with evidence that certain in-game assets were directly ripped from Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. The artist responsible has apparently been fired. Check the update to my original story for more.

Disney Infinity’s Demise Also Killed A Moana Game
When Disney Infinity was cancelled, it took a lot of in-development projects with it. Some of those involved Star Wars, others Benedict Cumberbatch, but one we hadn’t seen until now (though we did at least know of its existence) is a whole playset devoted to Moana, Disney’s next animated feature film. Unlike individual figures, which…

Beautiful Portraits Of…Fighting Game Pros
Kotaku reader Bartosz Hołoszkiewicz—aka Renton Holmes—is also a professional photographer, and he recently took a series of terrific shots of some Street Fighter V players at a tournament. These images, of some of the players taking part in the Capcom Pro Tour Premier at DreamHack Summer 2016, are, well, beautiful. Unless you’re a proper fan,…
