I’ve had the KPop Demon Hunters Criterion Collection Blu-Ray set pre-ordered since March. I adore Netflix’s animated musical about a demon-slaying girl group, and I know Criterion’s history of putting out amazing physical packages. Now, the company has finally given us our first look at the KPop Demon Hunters set, and it is gorgeous. I have no regrets.
The physical version of Huntr/x’s story is coming on November 3, and will be available in three formats: a three-disc 4k+Blu-ray set for $50, a two-disc Blu-ray set for $40, and a standard DVD package for $30. (Each is available at a discount at the moment if you pre-order through Criterion’s website.) The real prize here is the three-disc set that includes the film, a new making-of documentary, video essays by filmmakers Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou, and collectible postcards featuring Rumi, Mira, Zoey, and the demonic boy band Saga Boys. All of this comes in a gorgeous box featuring new art of the Huntr/x girls diving into battle that I might be about to make my phone wallpaper.
This is all for the sickos who want something on their shelves, as KPop Demon Hunters is available to stream on Netflix whenever you want, but it is a cool reminder that this movie blew up last year and defied all of Sony and Netflix’s expectations. It doesn’t sound like they’re making that same mistake twice, though, as a year of post-premiere promotion and awards season wins have made the film a household name. There’s even some kind of tour in the works, but information on it is scarce at the moment. A sequel is also in the works as part of a “multiyear” partnership between Netflix and directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
