I almost snorted out of laughter at the idea of taking Elder Scrolls lore seriously. They do such a poor job of telling the story (sure, push ALL the lore and storytelling to the thousands of books scattered around the game), it's like the game creators are telling us that it's not really important to delve into lore to have fun with the game. It's pretty funny how solving a family squabble in an Elder Scrolls game is often way more entertaining and plot heavy than many lore specific plot turns in these games.
