Frosted Mini-Wheats

I’m not entirely sold on what I’m seeing as far as a coherent aesthetic or distinct art. An awful lot of these shots could have been plucked from any open world game. I get that they’re rolling with the “Fantasy based on reality” concept, but this looks a little too grounded for my taste. The best Final Fantasy games have distinct and vibrant settings full of character.

I understand that going to an open world design makes it harder to communicate information about the world through the location art because there’s so much to make. But if Square Enix is gonna show off their settings to try and sell me on their game then they should be showing cool settings I’m excited to explore! Maybe Xenoblade X spoiled me. That game has some issues, but inspired open world design is NOT one of them. That planet is a hell of a place to explore.
