Here's How You Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors Can Download Your Free NES Games [Update]

This week, starting September 1, early Nintendo 3DS adopters will be to download classic NES games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda for free—as long as they hopped on the Nintendo eShop in time and achieved "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador" status. Turns out, downloading those games might be just a little bit... tricky.

Getting to those Nintendo 3DS Ambassador games isn't as simple as hopping on the eShop and downloading a few 8-bit classics as one might ye olde Game Boy games. Fortunately, the Nintendo support web site explains how it's done, revealing that we'll need to "redownload" the Ambassador games from the "Account Activity" "Your Downloads" section of the eShop, under "Settings/Other." Nintendo offers a step-by-step tutorial on how to find those free goodies, which you may want to brush up on before end of week.

Basically, it looks like Nintendo is flagging each 3DS Ambassador game as something we've already purchased and downloaded, even if we technically haven't.

The support site also explains what the Ambassador Certificate, a separate download, is all about.

The Ambassador Certificate is a downloadable video available to Ambassadors.

By tapping the receive button on the Touch Screen when viewing this video, Ambassadors will receive updates regarding the Ambassador Program, such as when new titles are available to download. As soon as details for the 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console titles are available, we will send an update to those who have opted in using the Ambassador Certificate.

Later this week, Nintendo will begin offering Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Wrecking Crew, Mario Open Golf, Yoshi's Egg, Metroid, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link to 3DS Ambassadors.
