Today’s big State of Play started off with a big, bloody bang as we got a new look at a mission from the upcoming Wolverine, Insomniac’s next big PS5 action game. And this gameplay provided us with our first look at fellow X-Men mutant Jean Grey. The game is set to arrive on September 15 and is a PS5 exclusive.
Here’s the new gameplay, which includes a lot of blood and gore. Insomniac also confirmed that Mystique and Sabertooth, fellow (but less nice) mutants, will also be included in the game.
The mission seen in today’s State of Play showed Wolverine fighting his way into a guarded base where young mutants are being taken away, likely to somewhere very nasty. In order to get and save the mutants, Wolverine has to slice and dice both men and women using some genuinely gory kills that would make Spider-Man wince and look away. If it wasn’t clear before, this isn’t going to be as cuddly and family-friendly as Insomniac’s past Spider-Man games.
Later on, Jean Grey shows up and uses her powers to help Wolverine, who finds a cool motorcycle and goes full Uncharted, chasing down the young mutants to save them. When he finally reaches them, one asks if he is a superhero. Logan replies, “No, I’m Wolverine,” before leaping back out to fight an army of baddies. I think he’s got it.
Insomniac has reconfirmed that Wolverine is a single-player action-adventure game, so don’t expect any co-op modes or anything like that. Also, don’t expect Wolverine to arrive on PC as Sony is reportedly done porting its single-player titles to other platforms.
Wolverine is set to launch on PS5 and PS5 Pro on September 15.
