In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's video game tie-in to next year's live-action Green Lantern movie.
It took a major motion picture starring Ryan Reynolds in a silly costume for Green Lantern to finally get his own video game, and for good reason. With powers limited only by the imagination of the wielder of the ring, no video game developer could ever hope to do Green Lantern justice.
Front Mission Evolved developer Double Helix Games is going to try, however, with Rise of the Manhunters due out next summer for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. Griptonite Games is handling Nintendo DS duties, and no one at all is working on a PSP version.
Details are scant at the moment, but the title suggests the game will feature the Manhunters, a race of androids created by the Guardians of the Universe as a forerunner to the Green Lantern Corps. The live-action film's villain will be Parallax, an entity that caused no end of trouble for Hal Jordan and his fans in the mid-90's.
"Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters gives players the chance to experience the world of the Green Lantern mythology in an interactive way, going beyond the events of the film and comic books," said Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Production and Development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "The game is the first to center around DC Comics' Green Lantern franchise and we're excited to give fans the opportunity to experience the power of the ring with engaging gameplay."
And it's all going to hinge around creating compelling gameplay with that ring. I'm not getting my hopes up.
