Welcome to the stage of history, Maxi, Tira, Voldo and Hilde. The four newest characters to join the ranks of Soulcalibur V are at the focus of this year's Gamescom showing, illustrating how these familiar faces look with another 17 years of experience and age.

The four new characters join Pyrrha, Patroklos, Zwei, Natsu, Ivy, Mitsurugi, and Seigfried in the list of fighters confirmed for the fifth major Soulcalibur game. We'll have new hands-on impressions of the weapons-based fighter from Gamescom soon. For now, see Maxi give Natsu the business end of a c, Voldo's new crotch ornamentation, a supposedly rebalanced Hilde and Tira still wearing little but straps in new media above.

Soulcalibur V is slated for release on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in early 2012.

Random thoughts on SC5 so far:

- Sweet baby Jesus, reveal Amy and Talim for the roster so I can stop going crazy. I need my speed fighters.

- Game needs more new characters that are actually NEW. Right now, Patroklos = Sophitia, Pyrrha = Cassandra, Natsu = Taki, and Leixia = Xianghua. Z.W.E.I. is the only character that's actually completely new. What is the point of a new roster when the fighting styles are all the same? That's just a model swap. (Note: I'm not complaining about these fighting styles returning, mind you. Cassandra has long been my "backup" fighter, so I'm pleased her style is returning in some form. My complaint is aimed at branding these fighters as "new characters" when it's still the same "skeleton" with a new look.)

- Balance, balance, balance. Soulcalibur and Soul Calibur 2 were two of the most perfectly balanced fighting games in the history of the genre. SC3 and 4 were good games, but not great like the first two entries, and the reason they weren't was due to balancing issues. We need a return to form, and no more bullshit like Hilde's "I win" combo in SC4.

- I'm hoping this is all still footage from the same pre-alpha build shown at E3. So far, I'm seeing too many reused assets (music and levels particularly) and absolutely no visual improvements. Granted, Soul Calibur 4 still holds up as one of the best looking fighters around, I would like to see the visuals spruced up a bit and get a nice polish to them, as well as more new assets (besides characters).

- To elaborate, weapons especially. I can already see Tira is using Eiserne Drossel, and other default weapons among other fighters. At the very least, add new non-default weapons. If Talim still unlocks the double crescent blades, tonfas, side harpes, etc, I might have to stab someone. It's one thing to use some of SC4's assets. It's another to use the same damn weapons we've had since the very first game.

- Lastly, Mitsurugi and Sigfreid are old as shit now, but the rest seemingly haven't aged a day. Granted, Tira is 10 kinds of crazy and is affiliated with Soul Edge (and does seem a bit more . . . matured, but certainly not "older" to the effect of 17 years), but there's no explaining Hilde and Maxi. Though, I do enjoy Tira's new costume (and not just because of underboob). A nice return to her original SC3 appearance, vs the ridiculous clown look she took up in SC4.

- Oh yeah, and Daishi wants to add Final Fantasy characters as guest fighters. I don't care what it takes, MAKE IT HAPPEN SQUARE.
