Jumping in video games is quite simply a hallmark of the medium.
It may seem silly at first glance, but simply incorporating this feature into Minecraft Dungeons II adds a whole new dimension to the adventure. Still designed as an accessible action-RPG, this title paves the way for a much more vertical design and richer environments to explore. This new approach is accompanied by an interconnected semi-open world that breaks away from the more linear structure of the original. By giving players more freedom without sacrificing the immediacy that made Minecraft Dungeons so charming, this sequel transforms the experience without betraying the spirit of the first game.
Why Should I Play Minecraft Dungeons II?
Just as the Overworld is enjoying a period of peace, its inhabitants are suddenly attacked by the Illagers. The Illagers have discovered the Sift, a new dimension teeming with souls from which they draw their power, and which has become the headquarters of their High Council. Deprived of their homes, the surviving villagers flee by sea and establish a fortified haven, Brave Haven, a port city that serves as a central hub. Now, the player’s mission is to stop the evil forces and restore peace to the Overworld.
Minecraft Dungeons II feels more accessible and dynamic than its predecessor. In addition to the franchise’s signature blocky world, the game features various biomes and delivers a particularly captivating atmosphere. Whereas the first game was limited to linear areas, this sequel goes much further by offering a semi-open world centered around Brave Haven. Players can travel from one area to another, setting out from their village to discover uncharted lands.
Compared to Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Dungeons II includes a jump button that offers unprecedented freedom: exploring, overcoming obstacles, climbing cliffs, discovering elevated areas, and even launching aerial attacks. The simple addition of the jump mechanic adds more depth to the adventure. At the same time, arrows are no longer limited in number. They now use an ammo system that automatically recharges over time. Another change is that armor is now divided into four slots (helmet, chestplate, greaves, and boots) instead of a single piece. This approach allows players to access more advanced customization and a wider variety of builds, as the game still doesn’t feature classes in the traditional sense. This is no small help when facing the three antagonists who constitute the High Council.
Visually, Minecraft Dungeons II clearly takes full advantage of the Unreal Engine 5. More striking than ever, the graphics feature more pleasing visual effects and optimized dynamic lighting. This results in reflections on rock faces, real-time shadows, and beams of light filtering through the forest canopy. The atmosphere is thus far more immersive than in the first game. Another significant advantage is that the biomes are varied enough to prevent any sense of repetition. The transitions between them feel natural, and you can easily move from a dense forest to swamps, passing through dungeons or mountains along the way. The colorful style of the all-new Sift dimension also adds a welcome diversity. Combined with more dynamic gameplay—featuring physical attacks and magical assaults—all of this makes Minecraft Dungeons II a much more polished title than the original.
The music and sound effects, meanwhile, follow in the footsteps of previous games in the franchise. The acoustic melodies are gentle, nostalgic, and unobtrusive, while heavier, more epic orchestral tracks heighten the intensity of the battles. With its dynamic weather effects—such as rain and snowstorms—the game offers an immersive adventure that is sure to delight fans of the famous saga created by Notch.

Even today, it is played by millions of people around the world.
If you enjoyed Minecraft Dungeons II, you might want to check the first Minecraft Dungeons, released in 2020. It features the same core mechanics as its sequel, but with a more linear approach, where gameplay takes place in enclosed areas. You’ll take on standalone missions by battling hordes of creatures in hopes of reaching the Arch-Illageois, an outcast who has become a tyrant under the influence of the Orb of Domination. Despite the inability to jump, the adventure is still engaging, thanks to an endearing world, well-designed gameplay, and additional content that enriches the experience. As in Minecraft Dungeons II, up to four players can play together in co-op mode.
We could have chosen another Minecraft game to round out these alternatives to Minecraft Dungeons II, but we opted for a slightly different title. Released in 2024, Lego Horizon Adventures is a lighthearted and humorous game based on Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series. Players take on the role of Aloy, the series’ heroine, alongside her companions Varl, Teersa, or Erend. Playable in two-player co-op, the game features very appealing visuals and is easy for anyone to pick up. Despite somewhat linear progression—due to a hub that leads to closed-off areas—the game remains engaging thanks to dynamic gameplay and a captivating atmosphere. If you enjoyed Minecraft Dungeons II, this is exactly the kind of experience that might win you over.
