Insomniac's new game Fuse is out today in North America. We'll have more in our full review later, but for now here are a few of my immediate impressions of the game — how it plays, how it looks and where it left me a little cold.
When exactly did it become a requirement to have a great, or even good, story and characters you care about? Dont get me wrong, Im all for those things, but hear me out. The majority of games we call classics (Mario, Sonic, early Zelda) had a bare bones story at best, it was more about playing the game. Why piss on a game that has interesting gameplay (havent seen a four player co-op shooter in the vein of Army of Two before) and cool ass weapons just because its story and characters are eh? Its still just a game, and is there for fun. I know Im going to get people who will say, "Well during the era of Mario the tech wasnt there to tell a deep and meaningful story like it is today.", well thats a good point hypothetical commenter, but just because we have the technology to do so, does it mean we HAVE to? Whats that you say hypothetical commenter, games are held to a higher standard now? Well maybe we gamers, as a community, should take games off of their pedestal and just enjoy them for what they are, games.
