The new live-action Street Fighter movie continues to confound me as its recreations of some characters look hideously stupid and others look delightfully stupid. Still, the movie looks campy in a potentially “so bad it’s good” way, so whatever the case, I will be seated. The latest trailer leans hard into the absurdity by showing off just about everyone in their costumes, and though some characters like Blanka and Guile look kind of off, I guess I have to give it to the movie for just going for it.
As we saw in previous trailers, lead frenemies Ryu and Ken are going through it in this movie, and we get a little bit of insight into why they’re not on the best terms and Chun-Li has to orchestrate a meeting between them at an upcoming tournament (jealousy is at least part of it). Once there, they’ll both encounter plenty of Street Fighter mainstays, such as Dhalsim, Balrog, E. Honda, Guile, Cammy, Zangief, and many, many more characters from Capcom’s fighting games.
It’s still not really clear just how much time the full ensemble cast will get, but either way, Ken and Ryu’s rivalry seems to be the centerpiece holding it all together. M. Bison is also up to something nefarious, though, so we’ll likely see most of the crew band together to stop whatever he’s doing.
Street Fighter is coming to theaters on October 16. Capcom is set to have a few box-office wins (or losses) in the next two months, as the Resident Evil movie is also heading to theaters on September 18.
