Dwarf Fortress’ overworld sure looks different. The developers recently shared another preview of how the updated visuals in the upcoming Steam version compare to the intricate base-building game’s classic ASCII style. In the battle between charming and accessible, which comes out on top?

No question, this is a flat upgrade for the vast majority of users.

ASCII made sense, given the nature of the project at the start, but let’s face it - these new graphics not only make the game more accessible, they also make it look massively better. (And they’re still WIP, even!)

The oldschool grognards will still have the option to keep using ASCII if they wish, but the also get all the benefits of the game reaching a wider audience through better accessibility, so literally everyone comes out on top with this.
